Phoenix Park, Dublin
Phoenix Park is one of the most important landmarks in the city of Dublin and is a well known park which covers an area of over 700 hectares and has a 16 kilometre circumference - making it Europe’s biggest urban enclosed public park. Situated on the West side of the city and within 3 miles of the centre, Phoenix Park Dublin has its
main entrance located at Parkgate Street, next to Castleknock and tourists will find that admission to the park is free throughout the year.
The park was first laid out in 1662 as a Royal deer park as designed by the Duke of Ormond. The initial layout of the park included the Kilmainham Priory which was dropped in favour of an order to build the Royal Hospital which reduced the park to its current size.
Phoenix Park is considered to be the playground of Dublin. There are many features within the vast expanse of the park, including a number of ornamental gardens, grasslands for livestock to graze on, an avenue of trees, a few forested areas and even some polo fields.
This park is also home to Dublin Zoo, which is one of the oldest zoos in the world being home to over 700 animals and birds. Also, the Áras an Uachtaráin, which is the residence of the President of Ireland, is located at the heart of the park.
