Attractions guide and Dublin Zoo
Dublin Zoo, or the “Zú Bhaile Átha Cliath” as the Irish call it, is located in Phoenix Park. It is the fourth oldest zoological park in the world, and the largest of its kind in Ireland. Since it was founded in 1830, the Dublin Zoo has continued to be one of Dublin’s most popular attractions. The zoo has helped foster the study, education and conservation of wildlife in the area, and has made a significant contribution towards the preservation of animals and plants in Ireland.
The zoo is open from Monday to Saturday between 9:30 am and 6 pm, and between 10:30 am and 6 pm on Sundays. Visitors must buy an entry ticket before they can enter
the zoo. The cost of entry for an adult is normally between Euros €15 - 20, with children below the age of 16 and above the age of three are required to pay a reduced rate, as do senior citizens. Entry is free for children younger than three years, and there are also special rates available to families, students and groups of over 10.
The zoo provides a habitat for over 200 species of birds and animals, and spans an area of around 30 acres of Phoenix Park. For more convenient viewing, the zoo has been divided into nine zones called the:
- World of Cats
- Fringes of the Arctic
- World of Primates
- Birds
- African Plains
- Reptiles
- City Farm
- Plants and Endangered Species.
For a younger audience, there is a Children’s Pets’ Corner. For people who are unable to walk the distance, there is a train ride around the zoo. There are even “Meet the Keeper” and feeding programs that take place everyday.
