Kilmainham Gaol prison museum - Local attractions guide
Kilmainham Gaol
Kilmainham Gaol is located in Kilmainham in Dublin and is a prison where most of the iconic figures of the Irish freedom struggle were imprisoned. After the establishment of Irish Free State, the prison was converted into a museum.
Altough a sombre and unusual museum and attraction, Kilmainham Gaol offers an important look at Irish history and it includes artifacts that bear testimony to the Irish nationalism.
There is an art gallery as well that has the paintings, sculptures and jewelry of the prisoners who were sent to gallows, not only at Kilmainham but also to other prisons across the country. You can even take an audio-visual guided tour of the place that gives a detailed account of the Irish national movement.
